Managing a Mobile Device Deployment in K-12
Schools are embracing the iPad in increasing numbers to address a variety of classroom issues and to take advantage of ebooks and apps. Apple’s Phil Schiller confirmed that more than 1.5 million iPads are in use in educational programs and that the App Store currently has over 20,000 education related apps.
The iPad as well as other mobile devices are easy to use, easy to carry, and have great potential for new learning opportunities. However, deploying a few hundred or a few thousand at a school district is a daunting task and will challenge the local IT group to keep up with deploying, tracking, replacing, and fixing devices so these learning tools can be available when needed.
I recently spoke with a frustrated administrator whose school had invested in rolling carts of iPads. She was disappointed by the lack of availability of the carts due to ongoing maintenance with the campus IT group. It is these kind of frustrations that good mobile device deployment can address at the outset.
